17th August, Deadwood, South Dakota

We’re in South Dakota, famous for Mt Rushmore. The rock with four presidents carved into it. As usual the US over exagerate. it was nowhere near as large as we thought. Still impressive though. The wild life in this state is abundant. Alive and dead [fossils]. Custer State Park is fantastic, herds of bison, prong horn antelope, wild burros, coyote, praire dogs, white tail deer. We even saw 3 endangered Bighorn Sheep before we entered the park. They were head butting each other on a rock by the side of the road. At Mt Rushmore there were mountain goats and nearly hit 2 white tailed deer on the road this morning. Yesterday we stopped off at Hot Springs. They have an ancient sink hole that was 67′ deep with over 100 mammoths in it. The place is actually an active archaeological site with digging carried out all the time. Lots of real bones protruding from the earth as they are uncovered.
We’re staying in Deadwood, recent tv series actually based here. Wild Bill Hickock shot in the back of the head and buried here along with Calamity Jane. It was, and still is, a gambling town and we’re going to try our luck very shortly.
