My wife and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. We have been lucky, actually it’s not luck but bloody hard work, going without luxuries and saving so we can travel. Our first long OE [overland experience] was to England for a planned one year working holiday. This transpired into a 6 year adventure with tours from England to India, Botswana to England. We’ve meet wonderful people on our journeys.
Some close encounters with animals include being nearly sat on by a silverback mountain gorilla in Rawanda. Having contact with malaria carrying mossies in Pakistan and Zaire.
Mugged, yes mugged for our chocolate bars by baboons in Nigeria, and giving an orphaned chimpanzee a piggy back in Zaire.
Also travelled Alaska to Panama. Spent a month in Eygpt and 3 months travelling around India and Nepal.
